DD Council Membership Application Packet

Recruiting New Members!
Governor’s Developmental Disabilities Council

This year we specifically need the following people to apply:
People who are 18 years or older and have a developmental disability* or are a family member of a person with a developmental disability.
And, who also:
Know about issues related to developmental disabilities.
Have the patience to plan for change that takes time.
Have experience and a desire to advocate for change.
Form opinions about issues and share them with others.
Use personal experience as examples for changing the system.
Are willing to negotiate and compromise.
Take responsibility and follow through.

TIME REQUIRED: One day every other month for Council Meetings = 6 days a year plus time to read information. Between meetings, members may have committee meeting conference calls that last about 1 hour. Many times, Committee Meetings are the same day as the Council meeting.

COST: DD Council Members are reimbursed for the costs to attend meetings. That might include, for example mileage, meals, hotel, personal assistance services, drivers, or childcare. Lunch is provided during the meetings.

* A developmental disability is a physical or mental disability acquired before the age of 22 that is permanent and that limits an individual’s ability in three or more life areas, such as: education, employment, mobility, living independently, activities of daily living, etc.

• The number of positions available on the Council may vary from year to year.
• Membership is balanced by political affiliation, gender, geography, cultural diversity, and disabilities/family members and required agency representation.
